Reforestation in Voskopoje
The Korçë region sits in southeastern Albania and is known for its mountains, cold winters, and heavy snowfall. The forests in this area help prevent soil erosion, manage water, support a variety of plants and animals, and stabilise the local climate. Over time, some forests have suffered from fires, tough weather, and slow decline, especially near villages and farms. As a result, the forests have become thinner, increasing the risk of erosion and disrupting their natural balance.
Reforestation projects in the Korçë region aim to restore damaged forests by planting native trees and using techniques that can withstand changing weather conditions. These efforts involve residents to help make forests stronger for the future and to support people in villages like Voskopojë in earning a living while caring for the environment.

Five years ago, we never imagined having a second planting location. Now, we’re looking back at the planting season in Voskopojë… How crazy is that?!
We kicked off our first planting season by working with local community members and the @GreenAL team to plant the first Black pine trees in the Korçë region. The area we have a planting permit for in 2025 is a small, 7.8-hectare forest at 1,450 meters above sea level that was damaged by fires. Only 2 hectares are good for planting, since the rest is too rocky or already has plants.
1,200 trees planted
Our saplings, grown from seed this spring at the Voskopojë nursery, aren’t ready for the forest yet, but we still wanted to plant some trees at the new site. So, we brought 1,200 trees from our Fushë-Lurë nursery to plant in Voskopojë, our first reforestation area in the Korçë region. It was a great feeling to see this come together.
As with any new beginning, things started slowly but steadily. We’re glad to already have a local team from Voskpojë and Kurshovë villages. While we were in Korçë, we also met people from Gjonomadh and Lubonjë who are interested in joining us for nursery work and reforestation. We hope the Korçë team will grow quickly and that planting 10,000 trees here will soon be as smooth as it was in Lurë.
