Update 28: The first open day at Voskopojë's tree nursery

Published: 5 July 2025

On Saturday, July 5th, we had the pleasure of welcoming both new and familiar faces to our second tree nursery and the entire day was amazing!

The event brought together people from a wide range of backgrounds: government and local institutions, academia, nonprofits, and passionate people committed to sustainable reforestation. We now affectionately refer to them as the Trees for Albania people because over the years, their support has been constant.

We kicked the day off with a gathering under, well… what else but a pine tree? Where we shared our journey, our plans, and engaged in an open conversation about how we can better involve different actors in increasing the impact of our work in both Dibër and Korçë regions.

Guests were then invited on a guided walk through the nursery, where we showed the four different species we’re growing there, explained the automated irrigation system, and demonstrated how we built our custom nursery monitoring system from scratch. Both our tree nurseries, at 1,100m (in Fushë-Lurë) and 1,200m (in Voskopojë) above sea level, are equipped with the same automated, high-tech, solar powered monitoring systems, allowing us to collect valuable data and track tree growth efficiently in both nurseries.

Thanks

A special thank you to our partner National Forestry Agency and Mr. Kliti Starja for their continued support and for playing a key role in helping us expand our reforestation efforts in Korçë region.

We’re deeply grateful to the Municipality of Korçë, especially Johan Marko and Mikael Bedollari, for their consistent support and for connecting us with key local contacts over the past months. This journey has been smoother thanks to their help!

We want to thank the Faculty of Forestry Sciences, with special appreciation for Prof. Asoc. Leonidha Peri, who travelled from Tirana to be with us and show his support.

And a big shout-out to Korça Alpin, a local NGO operating in Korçë region, for their positive energy and enthusiasm for future collaboration opportunities.

A heartfelt thank you to Imer, our Lurë tree nursery caretaker, who made the trip to Voskopojë to be part of this day. His constant presence over the last five years has made a big difference in our work. And of course, we are so thankful for Astrit, our Voskopojë nursery caretaker, seeing them both together, side by side in the new nursery, was emotional to say the least for the whole Trees for Albania team.

Last but certainly not least, thank you to GreenAL - a great example of an organisation that provides not only financial support, but also genuine presence, involvement, and encouragement. Their dedication to uplifting young environmental initiatives like ours is something we deeply value.
